Letter to the editor: Teaching accurate information is essential
Lehighton Area School Board members have come “under fire” from an insignificant number of vocal liberals in favor of imposing their ideology of indoctrination on the students of the LASD over teaching facts, for discussing whether or not to spend taxpayer dollars on textbooks that are slanted to the left.
The first and second amendments to the Constitution are prime examples.
The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”.
This Amendment guarantees freedom of religion. It does not guarantee the separation of church and state, contrary to the history book’s claim.
Most of our founding fathers were deeply religious, often praying for God’s divine blessings. They wanted to ensure the government would not sanction any specific religion.
The Second Amendment is also abundantly clear. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
This Amendment does not grant us the right to bear arms. It denies government the authority to infringe upon our right to bear arms! The history book I reviewed failed to include a comma in this Amendment and stated that the right to bear arms was permitted “as part of a militia.”
The removal of a comma and twisting the plain meaning of words gives an entirely different meaning to the Amendment.
The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, was supported 100% by Republicans, but only 23% of Democrats.
The 14th Amendment, which gave citizenship to freed slaves, was supported by 94% of Republicans and zero percent of Democrats.
The 15th Amendment, which gave all citizens the right to vote, was supported by 100% Republicans and zero percent of Democrats.
I’d bet these same vocal liberals think we live in a Democracy. Not once is the word Democracy mentioned in the Constitution; we are a Republic.
I think it is deplorable to pervert the plain meaning of words in favor of advancing liberal ideologies. Let’s teach our children HOW to think, not what to think.
I am unapologetically Conservative,
Duane A. Dellecker,
Member of the LASD School Board
