Weissport to use safer weed killer
Weissport Borough Council passed a motion Monday night to allow Councilman Bill Hartzell to spend up to $75 to purchase a high-concentration vinegar, salt and purple dye to be used for killing weeds that are growing on the cracks on the streets and the curbs.
“We need to kill that or it will start breaking up the streets,” Hartzell said.
The mixture takes a little longer to kill weeds; however, it is safer to use around pets and people, and the weeds stay away for approximately seven months.
“The purple dye is so that people can see we are using it,” Hartzell told council. “The mixture will not hurt anyone.”
In other business, Secretary/Treasurer Cheryl Miller gave council members a paper from Berkheimer, the tax collection firm, that explained two types of local taxes.
“EIT, or Earned Income Tax, can be spent on anything,” Miller said.
“LST, or Local Services Tax, at least 25% of it has to be spent on emergency services,” Miller read.
“We could do Chief Williams’ payroll out of that,” she said. “We could also use it for a fire hydrant, which is part of the water bill. It can also be used for road construction and maintenance.”
The LST is $52 per year that every working person in Weissport pays.
