Ligenza opts for Pitt over pros
Tamaqua baseball standout Mason Ligenza, who was drafted by the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the sixth round, didn’t sign with the team and has decided to attend the University of Pittsburgh.
In a story by the Associated Press, it said that 313 of the top 315 players selected in this month’s amateur baseball draft failed to reach agreements by Monday’s deadline.
Those players were Ligenza, picked 195th overall, and right-handed pitcher Angel Cervantes, who was selected 50th overall by Pittsburgh from Earl Warren High School in Downey, California. Cervantes said he will attend UCLA.
Ligenza, the Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Baseball Player of the Year the past two seasons, was the first high school player from Pennsylvania taken in this year’s draft and the was the 217th best prospect entering the event.
While it’s unknown what the Dodgers offered the former Blue Raider, the slot value for a sixth-round selection was $317,200.
Ligenza, a First Team Pennsylvania Scholastic Baseball Coaches Association (PSBCA) All-State selection in 2025, signed with Pitt during an early signing period in November of 2024.
With Tamaqua this past season, the star outfielder/pitcher put up some gaudy numbers.
Batting leadoff, the 6-6, 205-pounder hit .448 (26-for-58). He walked 29 times and recorded an on-base percentage of .644. He collected 15 extra-base hits, including four doubles and 11 home runs. He scored 44 runs and stole 27 bases, and finished with a slugging percentage of 1.086 and an OPS of 1.730.
On the mound, he dominated, posting a minuscule ERA of 0.25 (two earned runs allowed in 55 1/3 innings). He ended with a 7-1 record and walked just 14 batters while striking out 100.
In his career with Tamaqua, the left-handed hitting Ligenza hit .415 with 103 hits, 102 runs, 59 RBIs, 18 doubles, five triples and 20 home runs with a career on-base percentage of .527 and a career OPS of 1.287.
Pitt, which competes in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) and is coached by Mike Bell, posted a record of 28-27 this past season — including a mark of 10-20 in the conference.
