So, Trump signed the Beautiful Bill giving himself and fellow billionaires the largest tax cut in American history, paying for it by cutting off healthcare for millions of Americans and blowing up the deficit.
This bill is full of destructive measures that will make life in America worse. It will make America sicker with thousands of people expected to die sooner because of the loss of healthcare. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this bill, along with the expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits of the Affordable Care Act, will cause 17 million to lose their health insurance.
Healthcare economists at the University of Pennsylvania have found that these policies will cause more than 50,000 Americans to die unnecessarily each year. It will make America hungrier by cutting food aid that goes to Americans that need the help, all to make sure that the wealthiest get a tax break that they don’t need and many of them weren’t even asking for.
Seeing the President and Congress break their promises and ignore the American people is enough to make us question the basics of our American republic.
But it’s really important to remember at a moment like this that that’s not the end. It’s the beginning. It is too late to stop President Donald Trump from signing that bill but it’s not too late to change what happens next.
Many of the worst provisions of this law don’t take effect for one or two or three years. Which means it’s not too late to elect leaders who will do something different. We can still change these policies. We can also make sure there is a price to be paid for breaking your promises.
