Speed limit lowered on Point Phillips Rd. in Eldred
The Eldred Township supervisors passed an ordinance Wednesday night lowering the speed limit on Point Philips Road/Township Route 358 to 30 mph.
Chairman of the supervisors Scott Clark said the speed limit on the road was 55 mph, by default. The ordinance also restricts truck traffic to only passenger pickup trucks and delivery trucks, such as those that bring packages to residents.
The winding, steep road runs up Blue Mountain and into Moore Township on the other side. Although the road is paved on the Eldred Township side, it is dirt in some other areas in the other township.
The Eldred Township side was the location of fatal truck crash in July 2019 when a garbage truck lost its brakes and ran off the road while trying to make a turn and ran into a house. The driver was killed.
The supervisors voted in April 2024 to pursue talking to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation about reducing the speed limit on the road.
“By having that speed limit at 50, I mean, that’s crazy to go down through there that fast, but that’s what it was, so it’s a much needed thing,” Clark said. “Hopefully this will help bring awareness to people with additional signs and information, and hopefully, they’ll slow it down.”
Public Works supervisor Jonathan Gula said that there are warning signs on every curve, but his department will be installing another 59 signs along the road. They have already painted lines where the new signs will be installed. These include no truck signs, speed limit signs, curve signs, arrow signs and two winding road signs at the bottom.
“Every hash mark will be a sign,” he said.
“I think the residents up there are happy,” Clark said about the new speed limit and signs.
