Weissport moving to fix blocked drains
Weissport Borough Councilman Bill Hartzell reported to council that he was meeting with representatives from Palmerton Borough about using equipment needed to help clean out the sewer drains at the intersection of White and Bridge Streets.
The jet vac truck will be rented from Palmerton at a cost of $125 per hour, and two operators at $35 per hour each.
Because the drain is blocked, that intersection has been prone to flooding, causing the road to be closed at times, and affecting business at Chantilly Goods and the laundromat.
Jay Frey, owner of Chantilly Goods, attended borough council’s meeting Monday, hoping that the project would be done soon.
“I’m just trying to get an idea of how long this is going to go on,” Frey said. “I know you are doing everything you can.”
Frey said that the flooding is affecting his businesses, Chantilly Goods and the laundromat. Customers, seeing the flooding, go to other businesses.
“We lost a lot of business when the D & L Trail was closed,” Frey said. “And it happens, too, every time it rains and the street gets flooded.”
Hartzell said he needed to determine the scope of the work to figure out how long he needs the equipment.
The cleanout of the drain would run from Chantilly, back to the Lunchroom, and under the bridge back to the drain.
Hartzell also said he spoke with a representative from Liquid Fuels.
“He said that project can be paid with Liquid Fuels funds,” Hartzell said.
Hartzell will also check into the price of “street flooded” signs, plus flashing yellow lights, to help draw people’s attention when the street gets flooded.
