Coaldale planning for 200th anniversary

The borough of Coaldale will mark its 200th anniversary in 2027 and plans to celebrate in a big way.

Council Vice President Kim Gavornik said a few people recently met to brainstorm ideas.

One goal, she said, is to get local organizations, such as the Coaldale Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Coaldale Fire Department, C.H.O.S.E. and others involved.

Gavornik said the groups, might be able to provide some guidance, since they helped with previous milestone anniversaries.

While nothing has been set in stone, one thought is to hold the anniversary celebration at the same time as the annual Coaldale Rockin’ the Block. Rockin’ the Block is typically held over three days in September.

“That’s just an option to throw out there,” Gavornik said.

“I think that would be a great idea for sure,” council President Claire Remington said.

Another suggestion is a parade, Gavornik said.

Remington suggested a fireworks display and vendors.

She noted that there’s information stored at borough hall that might be of help.

Gavornik is hoping to see “the town, all the organizations and the churches involved so we can make this successful.”

At some point, planning meetings will be held on a monthly basis.

The borough celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2002. According to reports, the festivities included a five-division parade, fireworks and an anniversary booklet.
