Carbon County Environmental Education Center is now accepting registration for its Conservation Camp, an annual event held each August at Hickory Run State Park, open to all children ages 8 to 12.
This year’s weeklong camp is held from Aug. 11 to 15. Children who participate connect with nature through hikes, crafts, games, campfires, and a trip down the family float section of the Lehigh.
Electronic devices, such as tablets, laptops and video games, are prohibited.
A limit of 25 children allows for a high ratio of adults and counselors to children. Community sponsors help cover the costs, allowing CCEEC to keep registration fees low, with discounts available for multiple children from the same household.
“We’ve been running this camp since 1988,” said CCEEC chief naturalist Susan Gallagher. “It’s a beautiful setting and a place where kids can safely have all those meaningful outdoor experiences. They should be chasing fireflies and looking up at the stars — learning about trees and turning over rocks. We want them to know that time outside can be fun. That’s an important first step as they grow into responsible stewards of their environment.”
Registration for the camp fills quickly.
Anyone interested should call for more information or to begin the registration process. CCEEC can be reached at 570-645-8597.
