Coaldale mayor sends resignation

The mayor of Coaldale is resigning after two years of service.

Eric Ramirez submitted his resignation letter to Coaldale Borough Council on Tuesday, and in it, he noted that his last day will be Aug. 11.

The letter was read by Councilwoman Kim Gavornik at Tuesday’s borough council meeting. Ramirez did not attend.

“I find that I can no longer dedicate the time and attention this position needs and it is only fair to the people of Coaldale to find someone who can,” Ramirez wrote.

He wrote that he was “grateful to hold this position” for the past two years.

Ramirez wrote that he will help the borough transition to a new mayor if necessary.

Councilman Jacob Adamitis’ motion to accept the resignation was seconded by Councilman Wayne Figner. Council voted unanimously in favor of the motion. Councilman Francis Hutta was absent.

Council President Claire Remington noted that his last day is the day before council’s August meeting.

“I believe we have 30 days of (accepting) the letter of resignation to replace him,” Remington said.

The position does not have to be advertised.

Ramirez was appointed mayor in August 2023 to fill the unexpired term of Herb Whilden, who resigned in July 2023. The term ended in December 2023.

Ramirez ran unopposed — and won — a 2-year term as mayor in the November 2023 election.

As for the recent May primary election, he ran unopposed on the Republican ballot and received 59 votes. Resident Daniel Weiksner, however, ran a write-in campaign and received 122 votes on the Republican side and 53 votes on the Democratic side, earning him a spot on both ballots in the November general election.
