Pools enjoy stellar holiday weekend

Warm weather and solid turnouts enabled area municipal pools to prosper over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Palmerton Memorial Pool had a banner three-day weekend, according to Rob Palazzo, board secretary, Palmerton Memorial Park Association.

“The weather was great all three days, and we saw lots of members and day guests enjoying the facilities,” Palazzo said. “The snack stand went through a ton of pizzas, slushies and other crowd favorites.”

Palazzo added that on Saturday, the pool held its first Military Appreciation and Remembrance Day in which any active military personnel or veterans entered for free and got a free hot dog and drink.

“One of the PMPA board members also handed out over 300 red, white and blue cupcakes,” he said. “We wanted to be sure to take time to remember those serving and those that have served our country.

“We appreciate the community making the pool a part of their holiday activities.”

Palazzo said the pool is looking forward to its Christmas in July event, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. July 19. The rain date is July 20.

The Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool in Slatington also flourished, according to Kasey Meixsell, executive director of the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority.

Meixsell chalked it up to the night swim Saturday night to celebrate the holiday, and noted the weather was beautiful all weekend.

“We really do have great staff between the pool manager, lifeguards and office staff,” Meixsell said. “I know a lot of people really enjoy coming to the pool because our staff is pretty attentive and interactive, they do a great job making sure everyone is safe, having fun, and the pool is looking as good it can.”

Meixsell said the pool appreciates everyone’s commitment to the community.

“Coming out to our pool, there were so many other things to do,” she said. “That they made time to come to our pool, we really appreciate it.”

Meixsell added the pool has swim night’s throughout the summer, and urged everyone to follow their posts on Facebook or visit their webpage at NorthernLehighPA.MyRec.com.

Likewise, Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton thrived as well, according to Tom Evans, recreation director.

“The holiday weekend was awesome,” Evans said. “The weather was beautiful, the water is warm for everyone to enjoy, and our attendance was great all three days.”
