4 die in Luzerne fiery crash

A fiery one-vehicle crash on Sunday morning in lower Luzerne County claimed the lives of four occupants of the vehicle while a fifth person was pulled from the flames and flown by helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest Campus, Salisbury Township.

State police said the 3:30 a.m. crash was on the CANDO Expressway (Route 924) in Hazle Township.

Officials said all of the deceased victims were pronounced dead at the scene by representatives of the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office.

The fifth person, whose name also has not been released by police, is a 21-year-old man who passing motorists were able to assist in exiting the vehicle.

According to reports, state police were called to the intersection of Route 924 and Oakridge Road for a motor vehicle crash that occurred when the vehicle with the five occupants was traveling north on the expressway and went out of control. It crossed over into the oncoming lane.

Police said the car began to spin and left the roadway to the right, striking several trees before spinning around and coming to rest on its passenger side, completely engulfed in flames and trapping the occupants inside it.

Assisting police at the scene were personnel from the Hazle Township Volunteer Fire & Rescue squad, Lehigh Valley Health Networkv EMS, Hazleton, the state Department of Transportation, Kisenwether’s Garage and the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office.
