America250 representative wants Weatherly involvement

Georgia Farrow doesn’t want Weatherly to get left behind as celebrations and parades for the nation’s 250th birthday go on throughout Carbon County next year.

“One of my jobs is to get the word out there about this campaign,” said Farrow, a Weatherly resident who serves on a local America250 steering committee.

A recent America250 Carbon County meeting wasn’t well attended, she told Weatherly Borough Council this week.

Other communities are already working on their plans for the celebrations commemorating the historic milestone for the nation and getting grant funding to help with the costs, she said.

Weissport received a $5,000 grant for a parade, and some communities have received upward of $20,000 grants for celebrations commemorating the milestone.

Weatherly has numerous organizations that could get on board, including the Hillclimb Association, the library, museum, fall festival and other service groups and clubs, Farrow said.

“I’m working to try to get us to pull together to do some nice events,” she said.

Farrow brought information for council to review, and pointed out there is a resolution for communities to pass supporting America250, which Beaver Meadows already signed, she said.

The Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau is also on board with America250 and put up $10,000 to support the Liberty Bell project, she said.

Different artists’ work will be displayed on the bell, Farrow said.

“We haven’t decided exactly where it will be housed,” she said.

The visitors bureau will be working on tourism and marketing for the celebrations, but there are many different aspects involved, such as honoring military service, business and industry and history, Farrow said.

“We have history in this town, lots of history, arts and culture,” she said, and they need to preserve their history and educate, inspire and celebrate the next generation.

“When we’re gone, we need somebody to carry on our traditions and our celebrations,” Farrow said. “We have some really great workers, some really enthusiastic people on our steering committee.

“I just want to get everybody involved. We have got to do something for next year.”
