An Arkansas man faces several summary offenses after the rig he was driving barreled through an intersection and crashed into a driveway in Nesquehoning.
Borough police Sgt. Carl Breiner released details about the crash that occurred just after 1 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of routes 93 and 209.
Breiner said that a 2015 Freightliner with a 53-foot trailer, driven by Melchizedek Shabazz, 55, of Hope, Arkansas, was traveling down Route 93 when he lost control of the rig. As he reached the bottom of the hill, Shabazz traveled across Route 209 and up the driveway of a home across the street.
Breiner said that it is unclear if Shabazz stopped at the truck pull-off at the top of the Broad Mountain before beginning his way down Route 93.
Full-size rigs are not supposed to be using the Route 93 hill but GPS directions still direct them to use that route when traveling from the Hazleton area.
Last year, Nesquehoning, Beaver Meadow and state officials met and discussed adding additional signage and notifying businesses of alternate routes. Truck traffic has decreased, police said earlier this year, but there have still been a handful of runaway tractor-trailers that have crashed after losing their brakes coming down the steep hill.
Shabazz now faces eight traffic violations, including three counts restrictions on use of highways and bridges; and one count each of careless driving; driving vehicle at safe speed; stop signs and yield signs; obedience to traffic control devices; and tire equipment and traction surfaces.
