W. Penn plans for fireworks

West Penn Township supervisors are getting plans in place for the upcoming fireworks display.

During this week’s meeting, supervisors noted that the township police and fire police will direct traffic to the July 5 celebration at the J.E. Morgan Memorial Park at 49 Cold Spring Road. Emergency medical services will be on hand as well.

Township Secretary Katie Orlick said a meeting was held among the groups to discuss parking, crowd control and cleanup for the 6-9 p.m. fireworks event. She was also directed to send a letter to Mahoning Township and other neighboring municipalities to ask for fire police and other assistance.

It was noted that alcohol is not permitted at the event.

The event is free, however, and anyone wishing to donate is asked to call the township building at 570-386-4507. In the event of inclement weather, the fireworks will be held July 6.

Supervisors also noted that Farm Market Vouchers for senior citizens were being distributed from the township building on June 18. Orlick said a steady stream of applicants were visiting the township building.

“It is busier than last year,” she said.

Also during the meeting, supervisors appointed Karen Wittig as the township’s chief pension administrator and Shawn Phillips as an assistant emergency management coordinator.

The agenda was amended to allow supervisors to solicit bids for a backhoe bucket and a 15-ton roller.

Supervisors also voted to send the township’s roadmaster, Jeremy Frable, to a class in Gettysburg for recertification in dirt and gravel road maintenance.
