Flag retirement program Saturday in Summit Hill

The Summit Hill American Legion Post 316 will host a flag retirement ceremony and dignified disposal of unserviceable flags at the Legion Post on Saturday.

The program, beginning at 10 a.m., is being held in partnership with the Notre Dame Club of Schuylkill County.

Flags which have served the post for many years will be respectfully retired.

Also retired will be a number of unserviceable flags that have flown over the graves of departed veterans.

Flags that have become weathered and faded will be “retired and destroyed with respectful and honorable rites,” said Amy Jones, auxiliary president.

Chaplain Gregory Miller of Post 316 will preside over the disposal, involving dignified, ceremonial burning during the program.

Officials of the Legion said anyone having flags they want properly disposed can place them at a drop-off site at the Legion or bring them to Saturday’s program.

Post Commander Daniel Wehr will open the program.

Other participants include Sergeant-at-Arms Brad Jones, Stan Karnish, Clem Midas, Joseph Zubek, Kevin O’Donnell and Christine Novy-Miller.
