2025 Memorial Day services
The following is a partial list of Memorial Day observances that will take place in the Times News coverage areas:
Gilbert
American Legion Post 927 on Route 209 in Gilbert is holding its Memorial Day remembrance event beginning at 11 a.m. Monday inside.
Special guests will include Chris Bryner, a bagpiper, and Don Wild Eagle. The observance will move outside for the flag ceremony.
Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe American Legion Post 304 Memorial Day activities include laying wreath, prayers, rifle salute and taps at the following locations:
Saturday, WWI Monument JT M-Park & Lost @ Sea, 10 a.m.; WWII Monument North Street, 10:10 a.m.; Soldiers & Sailors Monument Hazard Square, 10:25 a.m., Vietnam War Monument West Broadway, 10:35 a.m.; Korean War Monument Diligent Fire Co., 10:50 a.m.; Civil War Monument Liberties Hill Road, 11 a.m.

Lansford
The Lansford American Legion Post 123 will hold the town’s Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Monument located in Kennedy Park.
Richard D. Pogwist, Post 123 past commander, will serve as master of ceremonies.
The guest speaker will be Kirk Cressley, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran from Lehighton. He began his USCG career in 1996 and was later assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Cimarron in Paris Landing, Tennessee, where he played a vital role in maintaining nearly 900 miles of Aids to Navigation along the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers.
Lehighton
The Lehighton United Veterans Organization will hold its main service on Monday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.
The speaker will be retired U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Pamela McGaha, who recently concluded a 37-year military career while serving as the commanding general, NATO Headquarters, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On Sunday and Monday, the UVO members will visit numerous cemeteries in the general Lehighton area.
Palmerton
The Palmerton United Veterans Organization Memorial Day activities will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. Monday in the 200 block of Delaware Avenue and proceed to Fifth Street, to Franklin Avenue, then down Franklin to Palmerton Borough Park, where services are held at 11 a.m.
Magisterial District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton will be the featured speaker.
Polk Township
On Sunday, Polk Township will hold its memorial event at the Polk Veterans’ Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden on Trach Road in Kresgeville.
Attendees are asked to participate in Operation Paperback, an organization that sends books to veterans and active military personnel, by bringing books — no romance novels — or monetary donations to the event. The cost to ship 20 books is $7.
Parking is available at Salem-St. Paul Church.
Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair as seating is not provided. In the event of rain, the event will be held in the church. This is a solemn event that will start promptly at 2 p.m.

Slatington
The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington will hold its principal service at 10 a.m. Monday in the Union Cemetery in Slatington.
Rural services will begin Sunday, when veterans will visit numerous cemeteries starting Sunday and into Monday morning, and that they put over 2,000 flags down.
The main speaker Monday will be former U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Ronald Kester.
Summit Hill
American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will hold the town’s Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday in Ludlow Park. The guest speaker will be retired Master Sgt. Brad Jones, a U.S. Air Force veteran.
The traditional parade will follow at 11 a m.
Tamaqua
Tamaqua’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony will begin with the parade at 10 a.m. It will form from the area near NAPA on East Broad Street and travel to West Broad Street.
The service will follow at 11 at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, West Broad Street.
Weatherly
The Weatherly American Legion Post 360 and its auxiliary will hold their memorial service at 8 a.m. Monday at the War Memorial in town.
The annual parade will then begin at 9 a.m., starting from Tweedle Park.
