Palmerton, Lehighton pools set for weekend opening

Despite unseasonably cool temperatures, several municipalities are opening their public pools this Memorial Day weekend.

Baer Memorial Swimming Pool in Lehighton will open Sunday for Memorial Day weekend.

The pool was set to open Saturday, but due to the weather, won’t until Sunday, according to borough recreation director Tom Evans.

Hours are noon to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday. The pool will then be closed Tuesday through Friday.

From that point, Evans said hours will be noon to 7 p.m. the remainder of the season, weather pending.

Evans said pool memberships are available for Carbon County residents.

“This is probably our best year we’re having selling memberships,” Evans said. “People want to get out; they’re sick of the rough winter.”

The daily rate for Carbon residents is $10 for adults and $7 for children.

Swimming lessons are offered with the pool membership, Evans said, and added they also give private lessons. Evening lessons will be at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. starting on June 9, with morning lessons at 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. starting June 19.

Evans said the Summer Youth Program begins July 7 at Baer Memorial and runs for three weeks, and it’s free.

Lehighton Area Pool Pals will conduct its Family Fun Night from 6 to 9 p.m. July 19, and Christmas in July at 6 p.m. on July 25.

Evans touted several of the pool’s features, and noted they’re lucky to have solar panels to heat the pool.

“We have an outstanding concession stand. We keep the prices affordable for families,” he said. “People praise our cleanliness; our facility is clean.”
