Coroner releases ID of man killed by excavator

The identity of a man who died after being struck by an excavator Wednesday morning in Weisenberg Township has been released.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio identified the man as Steven M. Gill, 36, of West Penn Township.

Buglio said Gill was pronounced dead at 9:49 a.m. Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

An autopsy was completed Thursday, and the cause of death is blunt force injuries.

The manner of death is accidental.

Gill was struck on the head by several tree logs at around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of Spring Road.

At around 8:56 a.m., troopers from Pennsylvania State Police, Fogelsville barracks were dispatched to the 3700 block of Spring Road, for the report of a crash involving a worker and an excavator.

Upon arrival, at the scene, troopers determined the individual was operating an excavator on the property, utilizing it to pick up and remove fallen trees.

While operating the excavator, the excavator rotated with a tree in the machine and struck the victim.

Gill was transported by EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest where he died from his injuries.

In addition to the coroner’s office, the PSP Fogelsville Station is investigating.
