Supervisor nods decided in Lehighton area
Republican nominations for supervisors’ positions in Franklin and Mahoning townships were decided in Tuesday in primary election balloting.
In Franklin Township, Nicolas Storm won a two-person race for the GOP supervisors’ nomination, defeating Anthony R. Frantz by a margin of 310 to 168.
Mahoning Township voters had four GOP candidates seeking two nominations for supervisors’ positions.
The winners were Matthew Wentz and Mark Schwalm, with 331 and 238 votes, respectively. Failing to win a nomination were Robert Slaw, 214, and Steve Chuckra, 171.
Otherwise, there were no other contested races in the six municipalities that comprise the Lehighton area, although there will be contests in the general election. Here is a look at the vote totals the unchallenged candidates received:
East Penn Township
Gary P. Kuehner, Republican, supervisor, 250; and Kathy Henderson, Republican, tax collector, 265.
Franklin Township
Sara J. Keiser, Republican, tax collector, 471; Lisa Sawyer, Republican, judge of elections, Harrity District, 164; Stacy J. Sheckler, Democrat, judge of elections, Long Run District, 77.
Mahoning Township
Carol Etheridge, Democrat, supervisor, 202; Pauline E. Homm, Republican, tax collector, 470; Robert E. Fetterman, Republican, judge of elections, Mahoning District, 220; Allison Everett, Republican, inspector of elections, Mahoning District, 222; Joyce Walters, Republican, judge of elections, New Mahoning District, 107; and Gilbert Walters, inspector of elections, New Mahoning District, 107.
Wentz, Schwalm and Etheridge will be running for two six-year terms on the board of supervisors in the fall.
Lehighton Borough
Ryan Saunders, Republican, mayor, 280; Jordyn Beth Miller, Democrat, council, 256; Rebecca Worthy, Democrat, council, 255; Joseph R. Flickinger, Democrat, council, 254; Jacob R. Bonser, Republican, council, 249; and Mary E. Strohl, Republican, tax collector, 313.
Miller, Worthy, Flickinger and Bonser will be running for three four-year terms on the council in the fall.
Parryville Borough
Thomas W. Kobal, Republican, mayor, 31; Jason T. Smith, Republican, council, 25, Monica L. Kunkle, Republican, council, 31; Michael Johnson, Republican, tax collector, 31; and Lamont G. Scherer, Democrat, judge of elections, 22.
Weissport Borough
There were no candidates on the borough’s ballot on Tuesday. The positions of mayor, council (three), tax collector, judge of elections and inspector of elections are slated to be filled this year.
