Chinese eatery in Carbon Plaza closes
A longtime Chinese restaurant in the Carbon Plaza Mall in Lehighton has gone out of business.
Chiu Kwan Kitchen, at 1241 Blakeslee Blvd Dr. E Suite 8, posted a sign on its window dated Monday to announce its permanent closure.
“Dear customers. Due to the expiration of our lease our restaurant will be closed from today onward. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your continuous support and patronage. Thank you very much.”
Victor Kelly, executive vice president of Larken Associates, which owns the Carbon Plaza Mall, said Tuesday that he couldn’t comment on the Chiu Kwan Kitchen closing.
The landscape of the mall is changing.
In January, the Shoe Dept. store announced it will open inside the Carbon Plaza Mall in August or September.
The Shoe Dept. would be located next to longtime tenant Pizza Como USA.
Nino Caruso, who ran Pizza Como USA inside the Carbon Plaza Mall, purchased the former Boulevard Drive-In and Family Restaurant at 59 Blakeslee Blvd. Dr. E. The popular Boulevard shuts its doors in early September.
Pizza Como USA will eventually be moving to the former Boulevard Drive-In site and will also be opening Nonna’s Ice Cream there.
Nonna’s will have the traditional Harleman family menu with chicken barbecue, hamburger barbecue, and hot dogs, and are looking into a partnership with Leiby’s for ice cream.
The Boulevard, which had been open since the 1950s, abruptly shuttered its doors on Sept. 1.
The owners posted on Facebook that, due to COVID-19 and the PennDOT 443 road project, they were no longer able to stay open.
Fred and Donna Kemfort had managed the store up until its closure.
Big Lots, located in the plaza complex reopened today under new ownership.
Marshalls store opened in August in the spot where the former Mahoning Cinema was located.
Starbucks has opened as a standalone in the complex and First Commonwealth Credit Union is building in the spot where the Country Harmony health food store was located. The facility is expected to open in a few weeks.
