West Penn officials seeking people for park commission

West Penn Township is looking for people to serve on a commission that would guide the future of its parks.

During Monday’s supervisors’ meeting, Chairman Tony Prudenti said ground for the township’s newest park, Atlas Park, will be broken sometime next month.

He’s hoping that folks will step forward to form a commission to oversee that park. Help is also needed for the J.E. Morgan Park on Cold Spring Road.

“Morgan Park is already well underway,” Prudenti said of the amenity, which has playing fields, an accessible walking path, pavilions, playground equipment and restrooms.

Atlas Park will be created on land donated by Dennis D’Angelo of Bella Terra Farms.

D’Angelo turned over approximately 25 acres of land near the former Atlas Powder Company to the township. A deed for the land was recently recorded, according to township solicitor Paul Datte.

“We’ve already put in for grants and that looks pretty good,” Prudenti said. “It’s going to come to fruition but we still need people to come together with different ideas for the park.”

He noted that D’Angelo has agreed to volunteer on the commission.

“He lives right there, he’s very close (and) he has grandchildren,” Prudenti said. “He’s very much into this thing.”

The township received a $242,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources several years ago to aid with the park’s development.

As for the J.E. Morgan Park, Tyler Buckman, of Boy Scout Troop 756, told supervisors of his plans to construct six benches as part of his Eagle Scout project.

“That’s a great idea,” supervisor Glenn Hummel said.

Buckman plans to place the benches along the Morgan Park’s walking path and near the playground.

Supervisors also approved the purchase of seven picnic tables for the park at a cost of $7,209.

And finally, supervisors noted that some are not cleaning up after their dogs.

The township will place signs reminding owners to pick up after their canines and to keep them on leashes. It will also add a dog waste bag dispenser.
