White smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at 6:07 p.m. local time Thursday, signaling the successful election of a new pope by the Catholic Church’s conclave. The new pope secured at least 89 of the 133 cardinal votes necessary to succeed Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88 on Easter Monday.
Cardinal Dominique Mamberti is expected to announce the name of the new pope from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica later Thursday.
More details will be released as they become available.
