Gilbert woman loses $5,000 in Facebook scam

A 62-year-old woman from Gilbert lost money in a theft by deception incident.

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks said the resident of Gilbert Road, Chestnuthill Township, was deceived in an investment scam at about 6:29 p.m. March 18.

She told police she invested $5,000 with a “scammer” who was impersonating a former friend of hers named Joe Calderone. Police said the scammer fraudulently accessed and used the Facebook account of Calderone to lure friends/contacts to invest money through a fictitious investment company.

They said the scammer edited the website he prompted the victim to use to make it appear as if she had profited in excess of $47,000 within a one-week period.

They said the woman was instructed to convert her deposits to Bitcoin before sending them. She eventually learned the profits were not legitimate.

Police advise anyone observing Facebook messages inviting them to invest with Joe Calderon through Amex CYPMarket to use extreme caution.

They also ask anyone with pertinent information related to the case to contact them at their barracks.
