Crashes investigated

State police at Lehighton reported investigating two crashes on March 24, both occurring in Franklin Township, Carbon County.

The first crash was reported at 7:59 a.m. along Route 209 (Interchange Road). Troopers said Carla Whaley, 47, of Lehighton, was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty southbound when her vehicle hit a patch of ice on the road. She lost control of the Jeep, which left the road and struck an embankment before flipping over. After impact the Jeep remained on its roof in the southbound lane.

Whaley sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Lehighton hospital for treatment. The Jeep was towed. Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the Franklin Township Fire Company and Lehighton EMS unit.

The second crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. also along Route 209 at Wagner Street. Troopers said Aladore L. Lorah, 89, of Lehighton, was driving a 2012 Jeep Liberty eastbound on Wagner Street and proceeded though a stop sign to make a left turn onto Route 209. Upon making the turn, Lorah’s Jeep struck the rear passenger side of a 2010 Ford Expedition driven by John K. Kurczeski, 45, of Effort. Upon impact the Ford flipped over multiple times.

Kurczeski and passengers Catherine M. Kurczeski, 45, and a 4-year-old boy and three girls, ages 3, 4 and 14, all of Effort, were all taken to the Lehighton hospital for suspected minor injuries or to be checked. Lorah was not injured. Both vehicles had to be towed.
