No action taken on Carbon salaries
Carbon County officials met during a special meeting to set the salaries for elected officials in 2028 and 2029.
However, questions remained and no action was taken at this time.
Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko said that the issue was not that the board disagreed with what they felt should be the percentage raise, noting that the proposal the board was leaning toward would be a 3% raise in 2028 and a 2.5% raise in 2029.
The board voted on the salaries for 2028 and 2029 because they are not allowed to vote on their own salaries during their term in office. All three commissioner seats will be up for election before these increases take effect, meaning that the board could be made up of new individuals.
Sofranko noted that based on the last 27 years of action for these raises, with the highest given back in 1999 at 4.5%, the overall average raise for elected officials was approximately 2%.
Currently, the board of commissioners makes $76,385, while other elected officials, which include the treasurer, recorder of deeds, prothonotary, sheriff, controller and clerk of courts, makes $68,350. The coroner, which currently is a part-time position, makes $32,321, and the register of wills/clerk of orphans court, which is a dual office, receives $70,060 for register of wills, with an additional $2,000 for clerk of orphans court.
