Softball game to aid Lehighton fire co.
They’ll compete for bragging rights, but in the end, the results on the scoreboard will pale in comparison to the overriding goal.
The ninth Annual Franklin Township Girls Old Timers Softball Game will be held at noon Saturday at Christman Ball Field in Franklin Township. The rain date is Sunday.
The day includes a softball game, along with a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing and homemade food.
Don Rehrig, event co-organizer, said the game is open to any girl 18 or older or coach who has previously played for the Franklin Township Softball Association.
Rehrig said proceeds from this year’s game will benefit the Lehighton Fire Department.
“It’s their 150th anniversary of the fire department this year,” Rehrig noted. “It’s to kind of help them out with funds, to help them organize their parade and whatever items they might need within the station.”
Pat Mriss, fire chief of the Lehighton Fire Department, said the fire department is grateful for any support it receives.
“We appreciate them thinking of us during our 150th anniversary celebration,” Mriss said. “Anytime the community helps out is a huge benefit to the citizens and the visitors of the Lehighton area.”
Mriss said the proceeds would be used toward general equipment.
“If you have time Saturday, go out and (enjoy) the benefit softball game, watching all the alumni of the (Franklin Township Girls Softball) organization,” he said. “It’s a good day out for the local community.”
Rehrig said the game previously raised funds for the Mahoning Valley Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Franklin Township Fire Department and Lehighton Fire Department.
“Anything the public can do to help us out is greatly appreciated,” he said. “Come out and support the Lehighton Fire Department and Franklin Township Girls Softball.”
Over the last eight years, Rehrig said the game has raised $23,335.
In addition to fire companies, he said the game previously raised funds for the Butch Rodgers Scholarship fund, American Legion Post 314 of Lehighton, Vanessa Hand Family, and Franklin Township Athletic Association concession stand rebuild.
