Man charged with fleeing police

Weatherly police charged a borough man with resisting arrest and fleeing after a traffic stop Friday.

Michael J. Allen, 26, was jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $20,000 bail. Allen was arraigned before District Judge Beth Dodson Saturday morning on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, driving while license suspended or revoked, driving without a license, and numerous traffic violations.

Police say that they stopped a vehicle Allen was driving, as he has a driving under the influence-suspended license. Allen refused to exit the vehicle when offered a ride back to his residence. The vehicle needed to be towed, and once the tow company arrived, Allen fled in the vehicle, police said. Officers pursued Allen, who was driving erratically and continued out of the borough at dangerous speeds.

Officers discontinued the pursuit due to safety reasons, as Allen was driving at dangerous speeds without regard to himself or the public.

Officers filed charges and an arrest warrant was issued, police said.

Hazleton City police found Allen’s vehicle abandoned and with damage to the front bumper and drivers’ side wheel. Allen was later located and taken into custody by Weatherly police.
