Monroe board OKs parking garage contract
The Monroe County commissioners awarded the contract for the parking garage maintenance project to South Shore Construction LLC on Wednesday. Their bid was $513,090.
South Shore had the lowest bid of six companies vying for the project on the helix style garage near the courthouse.
The commissioners received the bids on July 1, but Commissioner John Christy, chairman, said at their July 3 meeting that both the engineers and the attorneys needed to review the bids before they would award the project.
Christy was absent from the meeting on Wednesday. Commissioner David Parker, vice chairman, ran the meeting, and later said that “South Shore Construction has been in business for over 40 years with extensive work in parking garage restoration and repairs.”
Parker said the company hasn’t done work in Monroe County before, but they have worked in other areas including Northampton County.
The other companies that bid on the project include:
• CPS Construction Group, $683,295;
• Sealcreate Contracting LLC, $553,734;
• D & M Construction Unlimited Inc., $720,000;
• MAARV Waterproofing Inc., $750,000, and;
• Pullman SST, $715,779.
Parker said the work for the project includes:
• repairs to the walls, ceiling, deck, beams, columns and drains;
• recaulking, and seal of cracks and joints;
• installation of Americans with Disabilities Act signage;
• line painting and application of sealant on the entire top deck.
“The county has historically made repairs to the parking deck every 3 to 5 years,” Parker said.
The work is expected to start in September, Parker said, and should take 10 to 12 weeks to complete.
Christy said in an interview in early July that he expects the garage will be closed while it is being repaired.
“Being as the helix is the only way in and out of the garage, we anticipate a part of the time it will be closed,” Christy said.
The garage is located near the Monroe County Courthouse on North Sixth Street between Main and Sarah streets.
