Lansford man charged after standoff

A Lansford man who evaded officers last month was nabbed after a 30-minute standoff on a second-story roof on East Abbott Street on Wednesday morning.

Matthew D. Ferguson, 42, was arraigned by District Judge William J. Kissner on charges of flight to avoid apprehension and evading arrest, and jailed in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Lansford police said Ferguson fled out of a second-story window of a home in the 200 block of East Abbott Street and onto a porch roof around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

He reentered the home after a 30-minute standoff and was taken into custody. Officers from Summit Hill, Coaldale, Nesquehoning and the county sheriff’s department assisted, police said.

The charges stem from an encounter with Lansford police in June, when Ferguson fled from officers as they attempted to arrest him on a warrant out of Schuylkill County for failing to appear on felony theft charges.

According to court papers, Ferguson was seen in a garage attached to 45 Sharpe St. on the night of June 15 and evaded police by going through a hole in the wall into the residence. Police executed a search warrant for the home in the early morning hours of June 16, and did not find him inside.
