New Mahoning tax collector ready for 2014 at new office

Pauline Homm knows how to keep good records.

She currently does the ordering and record-keeping for her family's business, the Normal Square Mini Mart; is the secretary to the Mahoning Municipal Authority and has previously worked as a bookkeeper at the TIMES NEWS.Now, Homm is settling into her new position as the Mahoning Township tax collector. She replaces former tax collector Richard Swarcheck, whom she defeated in the 2013 primary election.Homm, a life-long native of the township, said she will welcome township residents to her office, located in the mini mart at 1706 Blakeslee Boulevard, Drive West. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays and by appointment. One of the things that made Homm's transition into her new position is that she is well-established in the community."I was born and raised here," she said. "Most everyone knows me with running the business."She added that the reason she ran for tax collector was because many residents encouraged her to do so and felt she would be a good fit. After all was said and done in the general election, those residents were right and Homm defeated Todd Koller for the position. When asked about the records transition from 2013 to 2014, Homm explained that she is starting with a clean slate for taxes beginning on Jan. 1, 2014. An audit of the 2013 books is being completed by Kirk, Summa and Company, hired by the township earlier this month.Homm is a 1970 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and is married to Leon Homm. She has a daughter, Denise (Breidegam) Frey, who is married to Nevin Frey.In addition to her business and her new position, Homm is a member of St. John's Church, Mahoning Township; and a social member of the Beaver Run Rod and Gun Club and the American Legion Post 314 in Lehighton.Homm can be reached by township residents by phone at 570-386-4626; by fax, 570-386-8431; or by email,
