Tamaqua students turn snow into opportunity
Twelve year-old Camden Alvarez saw a snow day from school as a business opportunity.
“My son is always looking for extra chores to earn money,” explained his mother, Amerique Daniels, of Tamaqua.
With a foot of snow on the ground by Tuesday morning, Cameron asked to borrow a shovel in hopes that he’d be hired to clear some sidewalks. He also asked his mother to post a note to Facebook to offer his services. Camden wouldn’t do the work alone; he enlisted the help of a co-worker: his sister, Gabriella Alvarez, 11.
“They were both excited for the chance,” Daniels said.
Soon after the post hit, Daniels heard from a Jim Thorpe resident.
“(He) asked if they could go to his mom’s house a few blocks away,” she said.
The two completed the task, and received their pay.
Camden will use the money toward a Minecraft computer game, while Gabriella will put hers in a savings account.
Jade Brotzman and others also visited the Tamaqua Area Public Forum on Facebook to announce that they were available to clear the white stuff.
Brotzman, of Tamaqua, does it the old-fashioned way - without a snowblower or plow.
“I’m just shoveling,” she explained, noting that she hits sidewalks, driveways and cleans around vehicles.
Brotzman also worked after snowstorms in January. This one, she said, was different.
“There is a lot of snow this time,” she said.
Kim East, of Tamaqua, said neighbors pulled together to get their shoveling done.
After the storm ended, East gathered a half dozen snow shovels and the work began.
She and neighbors worked together to clear snow - a job that took about three hours to accomplish.
“What a workout,” she said of removing the heavy, wet snow, “but it feels good to have good neighbors that look out for each other.”
CZ’s Lawn Care of Tamaqua takes care of mowing, trimming and weed whacking in the summer, and come winter, it’s time for snow plowing.
A crew was out and about all day Tuesday, tending to sidewalks and driveways with the help of a snowblower and truck, said Cameron Ziegler, of CZ’s.
“We’ve been very busy. Right now. We’re out shoveling and clearing snow,” he said.
The crew planned on calling it a day around sunset, he said.
