Tamaqua police charged Timothy M. Stahl, 52, of Tamaqua, for pointing a gun at two bicyclists following a Sept. 22 road rage incident in the borough.
Police said they received a call from a man about a road rage/assault that began as he and his father-in-law were on bikes at the traffic light at the intersection of Hunter and West Spruce streets. The man said they waited for an oncoming vehicle to pass but heard a horn beep behind him. The man told police that he put his hands up as if to say, “What do you want us to do about the truck coming through the intersection?”
At that point, he said, a man later identified as Stahl, pulled next to them in his Ford SUV and tried to hit them with his door before driving off.
The caller said he followed Stahl to the bottom of the hill where Stahl pointed a gun at his chest. He provided police with the vehicle’s license plate information and said there was a witness to the incident.
As police spoke to the bicyclist, they were informed that Stahl was at the station. Stahl said that he and his mother were in a vehicle and he “tooted” his horn at the bicyclists before going next to them. Stahl said he was cursed and yelled at and that the bicyclists tried to open his car door. Stahl said he left and was pursued by the bikers, and that is when he removed a pistol from his glove box and put it on his lap out of fear for he and his mother’s lives. He said he did not point the gun at anyone.
Police spoke to the witness who said she saw two bicyclists at the light, and heard a horn honk. She said the bicyclists did not try to open Stahl’s door and that Stahl tried to hit the bicyclists with his door.
Charges of possessing instruments of crime, harassment and simple assault were filed against Stahl on Thursday.
