Options considered for covered bridge

Carbon County is weighing its options on the covered bridge in Lower Towamensing Township.

Last Monday, the board announced that the bridge's height restriction barrier had been struck and damaged by an oversized vehicle. On Thursday, Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that since announcing the damage, the county has received phone calls from neighboring municipalities as well as a contractor who are willing to help fix the problem."We have to decide what we will do," he said, noting that they need to speak with the county engineer about their options. The commissioners are looking at the possibility of installing a "headache bar," which is a steel bar that stops vehicles that exceed the height limit in their tracks. No determination on what will be done has been made to date. The covered bridge, which has been the victim of numerous vehicle strikes over the past few years that caused thousands of dollars in damage, was closed to all traffic from July through Nov. 10 so crews from Professional Construction Contractors Inc. of Bethlehem could replace the open-grid steel deck and sandblast and paint the bridge. The cost of the project, $291,126, was covered by Act 13 bridge improvement funds and Act 44 funds.
