Failure to pledge allegiance and salute the flag for the second straight day resulted in the suspension of 11 pupils of the West Penn Township School District, near Tamaqua.

Teachers at the three one-room schools which the children attended, and the suspended students, gave religious beliefs as their reason for failing to comply with the requirement. The pupils, ranging in age from 7 to 13, are members of four township families.
