Younger students trying drugs, opiates

Across Pennsylvania, children are beginning to try drugs at an earlier age.

Here are some alarming statistics of the drugs being used by Carbon County students in 2013-2014.• Top drug choices: 357 Carbon County students have tried marijuana, 285 reported using over-the-counter medications, 140 used nonprescribed prescription drugs, 109 used LSD/mushrooms, and 104 used cocaine.• Opiate choices: 81 tried heroin, 89 tried Vicodin, 96 tried codeine, 87 tried OxyContin, and 89 tried Percocet.• Benzodiazepines used: 96 used Xanax, 69 used Valium, 65 tried Ativan, and 75 tried Klonopin.• Other drugs: 75 reported using Ritalin, 78 tried bath salts, 80 used methamphetamine, 78 tried inhalants, 69 used PCP and 82 used steroids.Information compiled from the 2013-2014 Carbon County Schools Drug and Alcohol Survey.
