Emergency response personnel were on the scene of an apparent mine subsidence in the Schuylkill County village of Tuscarora, just west of Tamaqua.

A gaping hole was found at the residence of Ellen Purin on Coal Street. The hole was found to be about 10 square feet wide on the surface, but widened considerably as it deepened. The mine subsidence runs through the Purin garage and a large portion of the driveway, measuring 60 feet deep in some areas. Two nearby homes were also evacuated as a safety precaution.
