Lansford seeks more police officers

Lansford Borough Council will advertise for more police officers, as it continues to search for a new chief of police.

Council moved on advertising with the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association for officers at a cost of $200. Council President Bruce Markovich said the advertising will continue for six months.

Councilman Martin Ditsky asked what the difference was between this action and joining the police consortium with other communities in the county, a move made earlier this month.

During the last meeting, Council Vice President John Turcmanovich had explained the consortium as “a central collection point for advertising and obtaining applications.”

Markovich said he believed that the consortium is still in the planning and hadn’t gotten off the ground yet.

Ditsky asked about when the borough knew about the cost, as the borough spent more to advertise in area newspapers with little success in garnering applicants earlier this year.

Markovich explained that Mayor Hugh Vrablic asked about advertising for police officers with the association at the last meeting, and the borough then inquired about the cost.

The borough is using the chief’s association service to conduct a search for a new police chief. The association began seeking applicants for top police job in the borough in August.

Council did not provide an update on the chief search, but the association had scheduled interviews with five applicants for this past Friday.
