State police at Bethlehem say Saturday’s shooting in Northampton Borough was an attempted homicide-suicide.
Northampton Borough police were called at approximately 11:34 a.m. Saturday to the 300 block of East Ninth Street. After arrival, the case was turned over to the state police’s Troop M Major Case Team.
Police identified the dead man as Burt R. Schutt, 53, who was pronounced dead at 12:52 p.m. by the Northampton County Coroner’s Office.
Injured in the shooting, which police said was between a “previous boyfriend and girlfriend,” was Lida Kat Gagliardi, 51.
Schutt and Gagliardi are from Northampton, police said.
Police said Gagliardi was taken by Northampton Regional EMS to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem.
Police said she is listed in stable condition and is cooperating with officers.
Police said a Smith and Wesson M&P 380 was found at the scene and used in the shooting.
Police said there was no threat to the public because of the shooting.
Assisting the Troop M Major Case Team officers in the investigation are representatives of the Troop M Forensic Services Unit. Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit, Northampton County Coroner’s Office, Northampton Regional EMS, Northampton Borough Police Department, North Catasauqua Borough Police Department and Coplay Police Department.
