Weissport collecting delinquent garbage bills

Weissport Borough Council is cracking down on delinquent garbage accounts.

Councilman Arland Moyer told council last Tuesday that 15 accounts are past due on paying garbage bills, ranging from $700 to $3,500 overdue.

Council members passed a measure to allow borough Secretary Aimee Shank to write checks to the Carbon County Magistrate’s Office to file against each account.

The amount of each fee depends on how much is being sought.

Moyer also presented the monthly garbage and tax report for August. Total garbage bills collected: $727.44 ($64,909.86 year to date); and total taxes paid, $981.31 ($54,033.02 year to date). Moyer gave Shank a $981.31 check to deposit.

Kitchen grease problem

The Central Carbon Municipal Authority notified Weissport and the Weissport Municipal Authority, Franklin Township supervisors, Lehighton Borough and Lehighton Sewer Authority, and Mahoning Township supervisors and Mahoning Township Municipal Authority, that there has been an increase in fats, oils, and grease in the wet well.

“The most common contributor of this material in any wastewater collection system is any facility that operates a kitchen,” the letter said.

The authority recommends that each of the contributing municipalities create and adopt “requirements for the installation of fats, oils, and grease interceptors” and consider a system for inspections and requirements for providing proof of disposal if the municipality does not already have an ordinance addressing fats, oils, and grease.

Council will look into the possibility of an ordinance.

Police report

Weissport Chief of Police Matthew Williams presented his monthly report for August. There were 23 calls, which included six traffic violations, four ordinance violations, three quality of life tickets for high grass and weeds and junk vehicles; three towed vehicles, and one each for assist to state police, landlord/tenant issue, trespassing, harassment, court attendance, and administrative duty.

Council reminded borough residents not to have items like grills or tents blocking public sidewalks.
