5 apply for police chief in Lansford

Lansford Borough provided an update on its police situation Tuesday night.

The borough advertised for police officers in three different newspapers, and no one applied, Council Vice President John Turcmanovich said. The borough advertised in papers in Lehighton, Hazleton and Pottsville with no takers, he said.

The borough did not advertise in Allentown, because the same ad that cost $1,400 for three days in the other papers would have cost $4,000, Turcmanovich said.

Council discussed running a smaller ad in the future, referring candidates to the borough website for more information, to reduce costs.

The borough did get five applicants for police chief. The borough contracted with the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association on a search for the next police chief, since no one has held the position since Jack Soberick retired in May 2022.

The application period is now closed for the chief’s position, Markovich said.

Sergeant Shawn Nunemacher has been serving as the officer in charge.

Council members said they may get applicants for officers once the police chief position is filled.
