Franklin Township supervisors

Franklin Township Supervisors conducted the following business this week:

• A 24-month extension was approved for St. Luke’s Hospital Carbon campus requested for construction of the medical office building.

• Garbage collection for the Labor Day weekend will be changed from Monday, Sept. 4 to Tuesday, Sept. 5.

• An electronics recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 21.

• A new burning ordinance allows the fire chief to put a burn ban into effect. Previously, the chief had to wait for a supervisors’ meeting. The police or chief can enforce the ordinance.

• A motion also was approved for the encroachment permit from Blue Ridge Cable to bore under Tatra Drive to replace a bad television cable.

• A date will be set to advertise for a public hearing regarding zoning ordinances and the Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance amendments of any comments/approval letters from Franklin Township and Carbon County planning commissions.

The ordinance will address short-term rentals and expand the commercial zone to property’s boundary instead of 200 feet.

Affected property owners will be notified.

• The township is looking at using PennBid to get a salt shed, with $75,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds set aside for the project.

• Surveillance cameras are planned at Phifer’s Ice Dam.

• Dean Ahner was approved to replace the garage roof at the main road entrance to the Phifer’s Ice Dam Park at a cost of $4,750

• The township is accepting bids for a new garbage truck.

• The quote for cameras for Zoom meeting was approved and came in under budget at a cost of $3,411.72. This will enable the township to have laptops with large memory and sound equipment. American Rescue Plan Act funds are being used for the project.

The next meeting of the Franklin Township board of supervisors will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19.
