Slatington accepts road work proposals

Slatington Borough Council made a motion to accept a $21,680 proposal from S&G for road repairs on Chestnut Alley from East Church Street to East Center Avenue.

The money would come from COVID-19 relief funds.

Another proposal of $22,450 was accepted from S&G for work on Oakhurst Drive. The money would come from the sewer fund.

Council announced that two Community Development Block Grants from Lehigh County were approved: $90,898 for reconstruction of Fifth Street from West Church to Franklin Street, and $87,399 for the reconstruction of North Street from Willow to Second Street.

The county rejected a request for work on Walnut Street.

Borough Manager Daniel Stevens advised council that a proposed CDBG award from Lehigh County for 2023 funding of air packs and cylinders for the fire company, which was originally rejected by the county, has now been approved.

“This came out of the blue,” Stevens said. “We applied for this last year. They originally said CDBG money could not be used for that purpose and rejected the grant. But this past Thursday, I was notified that they are now approving it.”

Slatington Mayor Jeralyn Schoch thanked everyone who participated in the borough’s first National Night Out.

“It was a huge success for us,” Schoch said. “I think everybody had a good time.”

Slatington Police Chief Greg Winokur gave the July police report. There were 346 incidents (compared to 305 in 2022) - 17 criminal arrests (9 in 2022), 18 traffic citations (23 in 2022), and 23 parking tickets (46 in 2022).

Council voted 4-2 to buy a new police cruiser from Fred Beans Ford for $41,051. The first year’s payment would be paid for from COVID relief funds. Council members Bryon Reed and Jeffrey Hausman voted no. Kevin Steckel, Zachari Halkias, Ronald Kratz and Thomas Bartholomew voted yes.
