Suspended lawyer gets 3 years in prison in fraud case

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A suspended Pittsburgh lawyer has been sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay restitution that could be in the millions for a series of fraud schemes.

A federal judge handed down the sentence against 51-year-old Eric Sobkiewicz on Thursday. Sobkiewicz pleaded guilty in February to bank fraud.

Sobkiewicz says he made some mistakes, but never intended to hurt anyone.

Prosecutors say he defrauded lenders, his employers, his clients and his friends. They say he diverted money from a real estate closing owed to a law firm to a personal account and embezzled about $23,000 from an elderly couple's escrow account.

The judge rejected a request for leniency based on his mother's dementia by defense attorney Meagan Temple.
