Carbon Fair opens Monday

With only one more day to go before the opening of the Carbon County Fair, the Lions clubs were scurrying around attending to last minute details.

Venders arrived at the grounds in Little Gap Saturday, as committee members posted signs, hooked up electric, erected tents and secured pens for livestock. The seven area Lions and Lioness Clubs started running the fair 1999.Bob Silliman of Palmerton Lions Club, an organizer since 2000, said the reason it is so successful is because the fair "gives people what they want and they keep coming back."In addition to the tried and true vendors of the fair a few new activities and snacks have been added. Fairgoers can now play a round of Knockerball which entails a ball that is roughly seven feet and a good amount of field to run around. One of the newest flavors at the fair will be the chicken cone, popcorn chicken in a cone.Silliman has two shifts a day running with 30 volunteers per shift, and says he could still use a few more hands. There is concern for the future of the fair as the organizers grow older and fewer young people step forward to help maintain the valued tradition. The annual Carbon County Fair kicks off Monday to Friday at 3 p.m., until 11 p.m. and noon until 11 p.m., on Saturday. The fair will run the entire week, filling the fairgrounds located at 3285 Little Gap Road, Palmerton, with vendors, rides, food, animals and families.Photo gallery:http://www.tnonline.com/gallery/carbon-county-fair-ready-open
