Project to revive eatery at Leiby's site premature

The scoop about development at the former Leiby's Ice Cream House and Restaurant is that there is no scoop.

Plans to resurrect an eatery at the site of the former landmark destination appear to be a long way from becoming reality. An email sent to media outlets is explaining that any intended plans for the site are far from a done deal.A communication was sent late last week to regional news media revealing that the announcement by project organizers was made prematurely and by accident."I would like to take the opportunity to clear the air regarding the happenings at the Leiby's Restaurant. There have been numerous rumors circulating and a plethora of mismatched information."Since last year we have been investigating the property to see what can be done. I have been trying to keep matters as confidential as possible as there is nothing official yet, and undue publicity will most likely make the matter much more difficult and complicated. Yes, there is planning being done, and yes we would love to bring this back to the community and reopen once again."However, this is still an extremely sensitive and volatile situation given the size and scope of the project. There is still a chance that this will not come together and our efforts may fail as there are several factors that still need to be determined."The website was made live prematurely by mistake, and has been taken down shortly thereafter. Though during the day that it was live, we received an unbelievable, tremendous amount of responses, many of which we took to heart and were very thankful for the support from the community."That being said, at this time there is no legitimate story for what is happening at Leiby's."Regardless of what may circulate or what people think, the real story behind what is happening lies right here, with us, and will remain as such until there are official plans in action."I would also like to say that the Zimmerman family is not involved with this endeavor, nor is the Leiby's Ice Cream business or its affiliates. We will be offering their products should we succeed in our efforts."I hope that one day soon we will be in the proper position to reach out and make the community aware of what is happening, when it is happening."The email originates from the domain "

management@leibysestaurant.com" and is signed "The intended buyer."The domain "leibysrestaurant.com" has since been taken down. The Times News story appearing two weeks ago specified that a member of the Leiby family, not the Zimmerman family, was reportedly interested in the site.

It might be a while before local residents once again partake of goodies at the former Leiby's Ice Cream House and Restaurant site, if at all, according to a news release issued late last week. ARCHIVES/DONALD R. SERFASS
