Local lawmakers react to Wolf's decision
Legislators from Carbon and Schuylkill counties were eager to share their reactions to the presumed end of the Harrisburg budget impasse.
Gov. Tom Wolf's decision to not veto the final portion of the budget means that the stalemate is set to come to a close after nine months.
Sen. David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks)
"... This final budget does not increase taxes on Pennsylvanians, which has been the overwhelming concern of residents from Berks and Schuylkill Counties. While there are some loose ends to finalize, including the governor's veto of reimbursement for school district construction, this is genuine bipartisan cooperation."
Sen. John Yudichak (D-Luzerne/Carbon)
"I am pleased that much-needed funding will finally be delivered to schools and other important state services. However, I remain deeply frustrated with the budget process."
"Now, it is time to move forward, in a bipartisan manner, to enact a responsible and timely budget for this upcoming fiscal year."
Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon)
"I'm glad that the governor finally realized this budget cycle needs to be over ... Many Pennsylvanians would have been impacted had Gov. Wolf continued his veto streak.
"Although it took too long for this budget process to be completed, I am pleased that we were able to arrive at a budget without additional taxes on working families."
Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Carbon/Schuylkill)
"The governor could've done what he did today last summer and saved a lot of needless suffering within the education, agriculture and correction communities. I am hopeful that he's learned how the process works, and we will be able to complete the 2016-17 in a reasonable timeframe, because this nine-month budget impasse is unacceptable on every level."
