SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - A former northeast Pennsylvania school superintendent has been sentenced for stealing nearly $12,000 from the district for pay for magazine subscriptions, gift cards and restaurant tabs.

Lackawanna County Judge Michael Barrasse sentenced 56-year-old James Tallarico Thursday to a week in prison, followed by six months of house arrest.Tallarico apologized to the district's students and administration at the sentencing, saying stress caused him to make poor decisions.He was the head of Mid Valley School District from 2014 to February 2015 when he resigned.The district runs schools in Olyphant, Dickson City and Throop.Tallarico was charged in July 2015 of misappropriating $11,692 in district funds for his own use, and pleaded guilty in October to one felony theft charge.He's still allowed to keep his monthly $2,070 pension benefit.
