A feature article on the Molly Maguires, with a unique perspective, appears in May/June issue of Pennsylvania Magazine.
The three-page layout is a feature written by Jim Devoy, of Ireland, who moved to the United States in 1988, and photos by Cindy Ross.Devoy writes about the persecution of the immigrants who came to work in the anthracite mines in the mid to late 1800s.He writes of those immigrants, "Most grew up in Ireland in a landlord system where 90 percent of what was grown was exported to their absentee landlords in England. In an effort to escape this unfair system, many left for Pennsylvania, not knowing that they were destined for a life of servitude again."The author visited the Old Jail Museum of Jim Thorpe, the sculpture recently erected in the Molly Maguire Historic Park in Mahanoy City, Joe Wayne's Hibernian House in Girardsville, and the Tamaqua cemetery where Black Jack Kehoe, the leader of the Molly Maguires, is buried.
