Reviving a coaster-racing tradition in Lehighton took a lot of moving parts.

One of the organizations lending a helping hand was the Lehighton Orioles Nest 183.On Sunday morning, organizers of the races, held this summer in conjunction with the borough's 150th anniversary celebration, showed their appreciation by donating a framed picture of the competition to the Orioles."The Orioles is a great organization that constantly contributes to our local communities," said Rocky Ahner, race organizer. "The picture presentation is a small token of my appreciation for the Orioles' sponsoring of the First Annual Lehighton Coaster Race."The Orioles paid for the event's insurance, trophies and banners.Bobby Heckman, of the Orioles, contacted Ahner and Elwood Reed to inquire about sponsoring the races."For as long as this event takes place in Lehighton, we want to be a part of it," Heckman said.Several races are being planned for 2017, but no official dates have been set, Ahner said.A second picture donation, from the Orioles to Gary Reed, also took place Sunday morning.Reed contributed 25 out of the 37 participating cars for kids to use in the race.The coaster race was originally run in the borough in 1923.Reed is no stranger to the event."I started doing it in 1983 with my boys, and I did it for around 10 years with them," he said. "I had a granddaughter in this race and just to see the joy in the faces of the neighborhood kids, it's a great thing."
