Car topples near bridge

A Wayne County man is lucky to be alive after his 2008 Volkswagen Beetle catapulted off of an embankment near a bridge on Interstate 81, in Delano Township, Schuylkill County, and landed on a railroad bed below. State police at Frackville said the crash took place about 2:43 p.m. on Sunday in the northbound lanes. The driver was identified as Ross P. Gload, 60, of Honesdale. Rescue workers had to gain access to the scene by using Lofty Road and walking the railroad bed to the site. Troopers said Gload was in the left lane when, for unknown reasons, traveled onto the west berm and into the median. The car continued northbound and traveled down an embankment between the bridges. It then rolled over and came to rest on its wheels on the railroad bed, about 100 feet before I-81. Gload was treated at the scene by Ryan Township ambulance personnel and then flown by PennStar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, where he is listed in fair condition. Gload was cited for the crash, troopers added. Assisting at the scene were volunteers from the Delano, McAdoo and Ryan Township fire companies.
